To the Timmelsjoch

The A12 motorway exit for Ötztal/Haiming is where you leave the noisy traffic behind you and enjoy the stunning natural surroundings. Travelling through the Ötztal valley, you pass through the villages of Oetz (812 m), Umhausen, Längenfeld and Sölden before finally arriving in Zwieselstein (1,470 m). Three steep hairpin bends take you up to the next terrain level where you continue on to Untergurgl (1,790 m). The modern, barriered mountain pass road starts just before the village of Obergurgl (1,907 m). At the outset, four steep hairpin bends take you up to the glorious meadows of the Angerer Alm where the winter sport resort of Hochgurgl is situated. This is where you can enjoy the first breathtaking views down to the Gurgler Valley and across to the towering glaciers of the Ötztaler Alps, the Schalfkogel (3,537 m), the Karlesspitze (3,462 m) and the Hochwilde (3,480 m). After passing the toll booth (2,171 m), the road follows the steep slope to Windegg where, after a right-hand bend, it joins the Timmelstal valley. After a relatively long, gently-descending straight section, the road crosses the Timmelsbach Bridge. Soon afterwards seven serpentine bends, perfectly embedded in the landscape, take you up to one of the highest Alpine passes. The summit, the Timmelsjoch (2,509 m), with its spacious car park and restaurant, is a unique spot to stop and linger, to take in the stunning all-round panorama and to simply enjoy the moment.
