Snow clearance

Due to the exposed high-altitude location, the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is only open to traffic a few months of the year. The exact opening date depends on the snow situation and the terrain conditions. Experience has shown that the road cannot be opened until the end of May at the earliest. Snow clearance, however, begins in April when two snow blowers clear a stretch of approx. 8 km on the north Tyrolean side. Workers have to contend with snow depths of up to 10 metres. The laborious task takes 6 to 8 weeks to complete – assuming the weather remains stable throughout and the terrain conditions, in particular on the South Tyrolean side, are favourable. The end of the driving season in autumn also depends on the weather. However, for safety reasons, the road is usually closed end of October.

The Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstrassen AG kindly asks you to note that the exact opening and closing dates can only be given at short notice.
