Excursion tips: Ötztaler Museen

Anyone who is interested in experiencing a day full of exciting impressions will find what they are looking for in the Ötztal valley. The Ötztal museums offer a diverse programme of interesting exhibitions and workshops for young and old. Be it the Tower Museum, the Museum of Local History or what’s known as the Memory Bank – the Ötztal museums are always worth a visit.

Ötz Turmmuseum/Tower Museum

Situated in the old village centre, the Tower Museum is hard to miss – its architecture makes sure of that: during the Middle Ages, the “tower” served as the home of a noble family. Following decades of use by the Ötz municipality, the building was finally renovated and opened as a museum in 2004.

The range of the museum’s collection stretches from sacral art from the Middle Ages to Alpine landscape paintings to contemporary art and photography. The Tower Museum’s focus lies on the artistic view of the Ötztal valley as well as artistic works from the region.

Tower Museum opening times

Beginning of June until end of October: Wednesday to Sunday, 2–6pm
Mid-December until Easter: Thursday to Sunday, 2–6pm
Guided tours can be arranged outside of opening hours.

Heimat- und Freilichtmuseum/Local History Museum and Open-air Museum

The museum site with its 16 historical buildings offers unique documentation of the culture and daily life of the Ötztal valley throughout the ages. For example, historical work and craft equipment, as well as everyday objects are on exhibition.

Long-forgotten traditions are brought back to life in the Local History Museum: Ötztal flax is cultivated and processed, the mill is used for grinding, wood is sawn in the saw mill and bread is baked in the ovens – and of course you can try your hand at this yourself.

Local History Museum opening times

1st June to 30th September: Monday to Friday, 10am–12 noon and 2–5pm, Sunday, 2–4pm.
May and October: Tuesday and Thursday, 10am–12 noon and 2–4pm
Guided tours for groups can be arranged outside of opening hours.

Gedächtnisspeicher/Memory Bank

The core of the Ötztal museums in Längenfeld comprises a comprehensive regional historical library as well as an easy-to-use archive. The foundation walls of the “Gedächtnisspeicher” memory bank date back to the 15th century. Since 2013, the building has established itself as the valley’s memory bank.
